I received an email today from Autism Speaks with some good news regarding adults with autism. I mentioned recently that the issues of housing, services and employment have received a good deal of attention here in New Jersey. It is great to see that these issues are receiving national attention as well.
A group called Advancing Futures for Adults with Autism (AFAA) recently convened a meeting which included members of a number of leading autism advocacy groups. A preliminary report from the meeting shows that the group will focus on adult services, housing and community involvement with a focus on cost-effective solutions. To keep up to date on next steps, you can access the groups Facebook page.
As the parent of an 8-year old, I have found that it’s easy to get caught up in IEPs, insurance reimbursements and all of the challenges of day-to-day parenting. These adult-issues updates serve as a reminder that we are in this for the long haul. They also serve to reassure that there is a growing group of informed and dedicated people who have already started with the heavy lifting.
